5 Environmentally Friendly Swaps for a Healthier You

Auto-immune issues, cancers, and many other health concerns are on the rise in all age groups. The most concerning? The rates are increasing most rapidly among young people. Why? Scientists believe that the environment and our lifestyles are to blame.1

In my last article, we discussed that environmental wellness extends beyond just climate change. Many of the products we use daily not only negatively impact the environment, but can harm our physical and mental health and well-being.  Below, you will find some environmentally friendly and sustainable product suggestions. These will help you make small shifts that benefit your health while positively impacting the planet. And, in many cases, you will save some money while you are at it.

Environmentally Friendly Product Recommendations

1. Water Filtration Systems

More than 45% of tap water in the United States has one or more PFA or forever chemical according to recent studies2. Furthermore, these chemicals have been linked to hormone disruptions, cancer, and other health concerns3. Additionally, farm and other runoff contaminates well water4. Even bottled water has PFAs. And, single-use plastic is not sustainable for the environment5. A lot of water filtration systems strip the water of these chemicals but also the essential minerals our bodies need.

So where the heck do you find good water, then? First, find an environmentally friendly water bottle. My top choices are glass or stainless steel. Then find a water filtration system that focuses on remineralization.

Aquasana SmartFlow Reverse Osmosis System
Aquasana Reverse osmosis water filtration

This is an under-the-sink unit. It removes 99% of water contaminants while also remineralizing the water. This was listed at 50% off at the time of writing this! They also have other options at different price points to best fit your needs.

Santevia Gravity Water System
Santevia Gravity Water Filtration Remineralization

Santevia is one of the best Gravity Water Filtration systems that not only filters but remineralizes and balances the PH of the water. They use environmentally friendly, non-toxic materials. They have a countertop, pitcher, and portable option that can be placed right in your water bottle. All of them are linked below

2. Air Filters

Air Cleaners remove pollutants, allergens, mold spores, and toxic chemicals from the air. Additionally, they can help you breathe better, leave a cleaner home, and help your HVAC system run better. This reduces cost and energy usage.

Levoit Air Purifier
Levoit Energy Efficient Air Purifier

This Air Purifier has gone viral on TikTok for a good reason. It is energy-efficient, compact, and very effective at purifying the air. It has custom air filter options, such as a toxin-absorbing filter.

K&N Lifetime HVAC Filter
K&N Environmentally Friendly HVAC Filter

Many reusable filters do not have a high MERV rating (efficiency in filtering). However, K&N has many different options with a top MERV rating. They are reusable, saving money while being environmentally friendly!

3. Environmentally Friendly Cleaning Products

Most conventional and even many ‘green’ cleaning products contain toxic chemicals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)6. These can cause many health issues and are bad for the environment. Because of this, look for products that are made with non-toxic, environmentally friendly ingredients. Use apps like Yuka or EWG for more on the ingredients that can be harmful.

Rosey by Thrive Market

4. Non-Toxic Fragrances

We all enjoy a good-smelling candle or perfume. Unfortunately, the majority of fragrances have chemicals that can potentially be toxic to us. Can we have anything nice that isn’t harmful? The good news is there are some options. Search for environmentally friendly and natural fragrances like extracts or high-quality essential oils.

Aura Cacia Essential Oils
Aura Cacia Relaxation Essential Oils Kit. Non-toxic, Environmentally Friendly

Aura Cacia has high purity standards without breaking the bank. They have so many essential oils and blends. You can use them in diffusers, cleaning products, homemade candles, on dryer balls, and more. Aura Cacia also has room sprays, carrier oils, roll-ons you can wear, and more. This beautifully designed diffuser is from a small woman-owned business. It is made of non-toxic materials, is energy-efficient, and is environmentally friendly. There are multiple light and diffuser settings and has up to a nine-hour run time.

5. Environmentally Friendly Laundry Products

I started having allergic reactions to laundry products at a young age. First, because of the fragrances, then different ingredients. The more I learned about laundry products, the more I realized just how unnecessary or harmful the products were for our washers and dryers, our clothes, and our health! Now, the only products I use are a natural laundry soda to clean my clothes, vinegar in place of softener for things like towels and bedding, and dryer balls with added essential oils in place of dryer sheets and scent boosters. I save a lot of money. Further, it is better for me and the washer and dryer!

Nellie’s Laundry Soda
Nellies Laundry soda, hypoallergenic, non-toxic, environmentally friendly blend

Nellie’s carries an environmentally friendly, non-toxic, hypoallergenic laundry soda. It replaces laundry detergent and is used by my family. It is effective and you need very little to clean a load, making it cost-efficient as well!

Smart Sheep Wool Dryer Balls
Smart Sheep All Natural Ethically Sourced Eco-Friendly Sustainable Wool Dryer Balls

Air drying clothes is going to be the most energy efficient but that might not be the most accessible option all the time. There are ways to help make using a dryer more efficient. Dryer balls replace dryer sheets and fabric softeners. They speed up drying time and soften clothes without chemicals that leave residue and damage your dryer. If your towels smell musty or aren’t very soft, it is probably because of the residue left behind from your laundry products. Dryer balls eliminate all of that and save you money. Smart Sheep uses ethical practices, making it a great choice for your wallet and the planet.

Conclusion

This is not an exhaustive list, but a great place to start. Much of what I recommend in my articles focuses on sustainable, non-toxic, ethical, and environmentally friendly products.

Check out some options for storage containers in my Kitchen Gadgets article. Or, my self-care suggestions including non-toxic candles and shower steamers. I even have some options for non-toxic yoga mats in my article on physical activity essentials.
