Dry January and Beyond: Best Non-Alcoholic Options for Any Occasion

Whether you are here for this year’s Dry January, are sober, or just a little curious about non-alcoholic options, welcome! Below, I have a wide range of my favorite options that have carried me through so many situations. I also go over why we drink, the risks, and the benefits of eliminating or reducing alcohol.

The Reality of Alcohol Consumption

Why do we drink alcohol? There are typically four main motivations behind it: coping, conforming, socializing, or to ‘loosen up’. Are these supposed benefits worth it?1

First, let’s talk about coping. Turns out, that drink might be doing more harm than good when it comes to dealing with stress. Alcohol can worsen anxiety and depression by messing with chemicals in our brains, like serotonin2.

When we think about conforming, socializing, or ‘loosening up’, are we really making good connections with others and being our authentic selves when we are under the influence? If we cannot enjoy someone’s company if we aren’t drinking, is that really someone you want to spend your time with?

Alcohol also isn’t doing any favors for our hormones. Thyroid issues, cortisol spikes, and imbalanced sex hormones are just the start3. Plus, say goodbye to quality sleep, which is essential for our overall well-being.

What about the toll alcohol takes on our physical health? Alcohol weakens our immune system, drains our body of essential minerals, and leaves us with headaches and nausea after a night out. And let’s not forget the long-term risks – cancer, heart problems, and a whole host of potential liver, pancreas, brain, and other organ issues.4 It is a level one carcinogen. Recent studies show that no amount of alcohol is a safe amount5.

Benefits of Going Alcohol-Free

Picture this: you wake up after a night out and actually feel like a functional human being. No more spending the entire day cocooned in your bed, nursing a hangover from hell. Instead, you’ll be tackling your to-do list, getting in some much-needed self-care, and still having time to grab brunch with your favorite people!

Reducing alcohol consumption also lowers your risk for short and long-term mental and physical health concerns associated with alcohol. This gives you more time to focus on finding balance in your wellness journey without the extra hiccups. Plus, think of all the cash you’ll save by avoiding those pricey bar tabs, which always somehow seem like a lot more the next day!

With that being said, the options below are for anyone. Whether you’re sober, sober curious, or just wanting to mix things up now and then, the journey is yours to own. I am here to help you make informed choices that are best for you!

Exploring Non-Alcoholic Options

If you have explored non-alcoholic options in the past, you will know that the options used to be fairly slim (club soda with a lime, anyone?). But, thanks to #dryjanuary and the alcohol-free movement, non-alcoholic options are popping up everywhere! Bars, restaurants, and even some breweries are offering non-alcoholic or mocktail options. You can also find some of these in liquor stores or other retail locations. If you do not have something local or are more of a homebody like me, there are online retailers like Amazon as well (I’ve included those links below for easy shopping!)

If you are in the Nashville area, you need to check out Killjoy, Nashville’s only booze-free beverage shop! They have a large selection of non-alcoholic options (including quite a few of my picks below), are highly knowledgeable, and have different events that include tastings and ways to connect with like-minded individuals.

My Top Non-Alcoholic Options

Wine Non-Alcoholic Options

Noughty De-alcoholized Wines
Noughty non-alcoholic options wines

Noughty has a range of sparkling and still wines in a variety of blends. They are low-calorie and low-sugar and have an on-point taste in comparison to their alcoholic counterparts. I have linked a bundle below with a few of my favorite options! And although reds are hard to replicate, this is one that is hard to beat!

Buzzkill De-Alcoholized Wines

For an option that is not in a bottle, I am a huge fan of Buzzkill. The flavor is so delicious and I had to double check the can just to make sure I was actually drinking a non-alcoholic wine!

Tost Sparkling

If you are looking for something besides a de-alcoholized option, Tost is my go-to. They are tea-based, but taste very similar to a sweet sparkling wine. This is my favorite to bring to social functions, and it always gets praise!

Beer Non-Alcoholic Options

GUINNESS Non-Alcoholic Stout
Guinness Draught Non-Alcoholic Stout option can

I was blown away by how good this tasted. As a stout drinker, I would say this is one of the best Non-Alcoholic alternatives that I have found. It has a look just like a standard Guinness and is brewed similarly, helping to match the taste as closely as possible.

Best Day Brewing Hazy IPA
Best Day Brewing Hazy IPA non-alcoholic can

If you are an IPA drinker, I recommend this Hazy IPA! Best Day Brewing was created by a craft beer enthusiast and they have multiple great options. The Hazy IPA is also made solely of Water, Barley, Hops, and Yeast and includes only 53 calories!

BERO Kingston Golden Pils Non-Alcoholic Beer
Bero Pilsner Non Alcoholic Option - Tom Holland Beer

If lighter beer is more your style, try the Golden Pilsner from Tom Holand’s new Brand Bero. It has a craft taste and has already been given high regards from Forbes, Food & Wine, and other publications.

Go Brewing 12 Mixed Pack
Go Brewing Mix Pack of non alcoholic options of beers

Not sure which one to try? How about a little of everything? Here is a variety pack with a range of options from Go Brewing. I have yet to try a beer of theirs that doesn’t impress me!

Non-Alcoholic Spirit Options

NKD DistilLery Non-alcoholic Spirits
Nkd Non-alcoholic bottles of Tequila, Whiskey, Gin options

These are the best non-alcoholic spirit alternatives I have found! The NKD N/A Whiskey, Gin, and Tequila have a super close taste to their alcohol counterpart, which is difficult to do with typically high-alcohol-content beverages.

Lyre’s Non-alcoholic Spirits

Lyre’s has a whole line of non-alcoholic spirits that do a pretty great job of replicating the taste of what spirit they are trying to emulate. My favorite is the Amaretti. It tastes so close to an Amaretto, I was shocked. I have linked all of their options below.

Pathfinder

I have fallen in love with Pathfinder. It has a great taste (Fernet/Amaro) and great ingredients that support digestion and gut health. My favorite is mixing it with a little of the Nkd Whiskey to give almost an Old Fashioned taste.

Zero-Proof Cocktail Options

Phony Mezcal Negroni
Phony Mezcal Negroni Glass non-alcoholic bottle

I heard great things from others on Phony Negroni and had to try. It did not disappoint! This is perfect for those who want a true-to-taste non-alcoholic option! I have linked the maker’s website below (I do not receive any commission from them). This is also available at Killjoy in Nashville!

Lyre’s AMalfi Spritz

I have been honestly impressed with all of Lyre’s products – their spirits and ready-to-drink options. This Amalfi Spritz is one of my favorites, so I have linked it below. But don’t forget to check out their other options as well!

Ghia Non-Alcoholic Spritz

Ghia has so many great flavors, but their newest is quickly becoming a staple for me. The blood orange spritz is a perfect combination of flavors! I have linked it below.

Adaptogenic and Nootropic Beverage Options

Adaptogens and nootropics are natural ingredients that aid in relaxation, boost our mood, and combat stress. Although many of them do not mimic the exact flavor of alcohol, they have become more popular as they accomplish what many people are looking for when they have their after-work glass of wine. This is a great option for those who are looking for non-alcoholic options that have added benefits!

Adaptogenic Spirits

Three Spirit Night Cap
Three Spirit Nightcap non-alcoholic adaptogen and nootropic option. Brown bottle

This drink has a woody, spicy, and slightly sweet taste that is great for sipping or as a mix. The herbs and adaptogens bring calm and relaxation and are a great way to wind down at night. I like to mix this with an orange slice, cherry, and a dash of N/A bitters for an Old Fashioned feel!

Little Saints Spirit Alternative

Little Saints has ready-to-drink cans and spirit alternatives. Their St. Ember (Mezcal), St. Juniper (Gin), and St. Oak (Bourbon), all have great flavors that emulate the spirit, but are still their own spin, making them a unique experience. And, they contain great adaptogens, like Lion’s Mane! I have linked the St. Ember.

Adaptogenic Ready-to-Drink Options

Kin Euphorics Lightwave
Kin Euphorics Lightwave Non-Alcoholic Adaptogen option. Blue and pink can

Kin offers many options, ranging from Actual Sunshine to Dream Light. My favorite: Lightwave. The taste is described as lavender-vanilla and smoked sea salt. It has adaptogens, nootropics, and botanicals that promote a sense of calm. Kin is also vegan, health-conscious, cruelty-free, and plant-based.

Recess Sampler
Recess non-alcoholic mocktail options variety pack. paloma, margarita, mule, mojito

Recess offers a zero-proof cocktail line. They have a refreshing taste and are a great option if you are looking for the adaptogen benefits while still wanting an alcohol-like taste.

BRĒZ Mushroom Drink Variety Pack

BRĒZ has quickly become one of my favorites for any occasion. They have options for energy, focus, and relaxation, as well as hemp beverages that also include adaptogens if you are interested in that. I am actually drinking the Flow right now to help with my focus as I write because of the lions mane and other great ingredients.

Kava

Kava is a root from the South Pacific Islands that has calming effects and has been gaining a lot of traction for the ability to actually feel it in the body, without impairing you, making it super unique. When enjoyed straight, Kava has an earthy, peppery taste. However, there are so many Kava options out there that taste so delicious. Here are a couple of my favorites!

Kava Haven

Kava Haven is a spirit alternative with a citrus and ginger taste, making it super versatile and able to be mixed with sparkling water, into an N/A cocktail, or even just enjoyed straight!

Leilo Variety Pack
Leilo Kava Variety Pack cans

Leilo offers a great line of fruity sparkling drinks and a zero-proof cocktails that lighten up the taste and are refreshing!

Homemade Mocktail Creations

Mocktail Mule

This is my favorite homemade Mocktail. Mix ginger beer, sparkling water, and a splash of lime juice. You can spruce it up from there, adding in an N/A spirit, a simple syrup of any kind, or garnish with a lime, mint, or rosemary.

Linked is one of my favorite ginger beers from Q Mixers, made with real ingredients to get you started!

CherryBerry Bedtime Mocktail

Muddle fresh berries, add tart cherry juice and sparkling water or a Poppi, and finish with a twist of lemon or lime. It is great for a bedtime mocktail as tart cherry contains tryptophan and helps with melatonin production for a more restful sleep. To level it up, add some powdered magnesium for an even more restful night’s sleep and a ‘sleepy girl mocktail’ vibe!

I linked a tart cherry juice option that is organic, no sugar added, and highly rated.

Kombucha and Prebiotic Sodas

Humm Kombucha Variety Pack
Humm Kombucha Non-alcoholic Variety pack options

I love to mix my Kombucha with a little sparkling water for a seltzer vibe. Kombucha also supports gut health, so it is a win-win! Humm has this zero-sugar option with a good variety of flavors. They pack only 10 calories and are shelf-stable, making it one of my top choices!

Poppi vARIETY pACK
Poppi non-alcoholic options prebiotic sodas variety cans strawberry, lemonade orange, cherry li,e

I love Prebiotic sodas! You can drink them straight or use them as a mixer. Poppi is one of my favorites as it has such a range of flavors and they are low in sugar and calories. Plus, they are great for your gut!

Humm and Poppi are also part of my auto-ship orders from Thrive, where I am able to get them at a discount with most orders. Click below for $60 in free groceries for your first order.

Sparkling Waters

Topo Chico Variety Pack

This has been one of the best alternatives I have found to seltzers. They taste great, and they have real fruit and herbal extracts. With the naturally low sugar and calories, as well as the light, refreshing taste, this is a perfect summer sipping option!

Spindrift Variety Pack
Spindrift Sparkling water non-alcoholic options variety pack. 4 options

Spindrift is a sparkling water that is also made with real fruit and contains no added sugars. It is one of the highest-rated sparkling waters for its high quality. Spindrift is a great mixer as it comes in a variety of flavors like raspberry lime and lemon.

  1. I didn’t even realize some of these non-alcoholic beverages were an option thanks for sharing! Curious if you have tips for non-alcoholic drinks when going out as that seems to be a frequent problem. I usually look for a mocktail or kambucha but find that not many other options exist to my knowledge.

    1. Absolutely! And there truly are so many options! For going out, it can be a hit or miss depending on where you are but here are some of my go-to’s to ask for at a bar or other event: Soda or tonic water and a lime, Mocktail Mule (ginger beer, lime juice, club soda), Virgin Bloody Mary, Arnold Palmer, or similar tea or lemonade mix, virgin margaritas, flavored seltzer water, or even bringing your own drink mix – like this one, https://amzn.to/49yJ5fH , that allows you to mix it with water or club soda for a cocktail like drink. Fortunately, due to more interest in this market, more places are offering more options, so I am hoping those options continue to increase! Thank you for stopping by and let me know if you have any other questions!

  2. Useful article. I can’t have alcohol right now so there are many options to replace my Sunday cocktail. I always wanted to try the adaptogenic beverages.

    1. Thank you for stopping by! I am glad you found some options to try! You will have to let me know what your favorite is! It is wonderful to see so many options out there now that not only help with relaxation but also have health benefits!

  3. I’m always looking for a good alternative to alcoholic beverages. The non-alcoholic red wines I’ve tried haven’t been the best, but I’ll try your suggestions. Thank you for sharing this list.

    1. Absolutely! Another one of my suggestions would be Leitz. I have not tried their Red Wines, but their Riesling is a perfect taste match. Red wines are hard, but looking for options that are dealcoholized or alcohol removed generally have a better taste than a alcohol-free that is made differently. I have also had it recommended to use a smoking kit or smoked cedar to infuse the drier red N/A wines to give it a more smokey, aged taste if you are wanting to get real fancy! Good luck on your journey and thank you for stopping by!
