Year of Wellness: Finding Balance in Occupational Wellness
Achieving Workplace Satisfaction: Top Tips and Resources
Occupational wellness is an important, yet often overlooked, aspect of our overall well-being. Career satisfaction is at an all-time low. And, a recent study showed that around 50% of the global workforce is “quiet quitting”1.
There are so many reasons for this: wages, work and personal stress, workplace environment, and more. Although we cannot control all of those factors, we can control some that can help us feel more fulfilled in life when looking through the lens of occupational wellness.
But, what even is occupational wellness? Why is it important? Let’s take a look at these questions as well as some tips for achieving it. Plus, I’ll share some products and resources to help you on your journey to a more balanced work life.

What is Occupational Wellness?
Occupational wellness is about finding personal satisfaction and enrichment in our work. This looks at not only our role itself, but also our relationships with colleagues, our work environment, and our ability to manage work-related stress.
Occupational wellness also involves looking at whether our work aligns with our values, interests, and passions. When we achieve occupational wellness, we feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. That feeling then extends into other areas of our lives. This can be true for people working in an entry-level position, in leadership roles, and even for entrepreneurs.
The Benefits of Balanced Occupational Wellness

- Increased Job Satisfaction: When you are engaged and happy with your work, it translates into greater job satisfaction and productivity
- Greater Work-Life Balance: Occupational wellness encourages a balance between work and personal life, reducing burnout and stress.
- Improved Physical and Mental Health: A fulfilling job can contribute to better mental health and lower levels of stress, which in turn can improve physical health.
- Motivation and Creativity: Feeling satisfied and engaged at work can boost your motivation and creativity, leading to better performance and job success.
- Stronger Professional Relationships: Positive interactions with colleagues and a supportive work environment can enhance your overall job satisfaction and career growth.
How to Nourish Your Occupational Wellness

- Find Meaning in Your Work: Reflect on how your work aligns with your values and passions. This does not mean that you need to be in your “dream career” or love every minute of what you do. And most commonly, that is not going to be the case for your entire career. But, finding joy in certain aspects of your job can go a long way. Books like Start with Why by Simon Sinek can help provide some insight into finding purpose in your career.
- Set Clear Goals: Identify career objectives. Set clear, achievable goals. Identify short- and long-term targets to help you give you a sense of direction and purpose. Not sure where to start? Look into finding a mentor in your field or organization. Or, reach out to me or another Health and Wellness Coach. Coaches can help you identify and support you through goals that also nourish you in all aspects of wellness
- Seek Continuous Learning and Growth Opportunities: Utilize resources inside and outside of work to learn, grow, and develop new skills. This could include courses, workshops, finding a mentor, or exploring new roles or opportunities. Check out tools like LinkedIn, Coursera, or even YouTube for education and resources.
- Create a Positive Work Environment: Focus on developing a workspace that is both comfortable and conducive to productivity. If you work with others, build healthy professional relationships that help you feel comfortable and supported. For your workspace itself, use ergonomic furniture, good lighting, and a neat, distraction-free workspace. Check out this electric sit/stand desk that comes in a variety of colors and sizes.
- Prioritize Work-Life Balance: Make sure to make time for activities that you enjoy outside of work. Try a new hobby, join a club, move your body, or spend time with family and friends. Try implementing this using this hourly planner that even has a section labeled work-life balance.
- Focus on Stress Management: Incorporate stress management techniques into your daily routine. This can include mindfulness, meditation, or taking breaks throughout the day. Check out a few of my suggested tools to help with that here.
- Develop Healthy Self-Care and Wellness Tools: Making sure you are taking care of yourself mentally and physically also helps to encourage better occupational wellness. Learn more about getting regular movement, proper nutrition, and practicing regular self-care to help you enhance your wellness and give you more ability to be present and fulfilled at work.
Additional Products to Enhance Occupational Wellness
1. Noise-Canceling Headphones
Use noise-canceling headphones to limit distractions while working. Having a versatile pair that can also move into transparent mode to help you be more aware of your surroundings when needed is also a great touch. You can use these to take calls, listen to music, an audiobook, or a podcast, or even play a guided meditation if you need some stress reduction or refocus.

These are great for the price and what I currently use. I even prefer them over my Pixel Buds! They’re waterproof, fit great, and have touch control, making them perfect for work or a workout. They have amazing sound quality, noise canceling and transparency modes, and noise reduction in the microphone. Tozo also carries a very high-rated over-the-ear version as well!

These over-the-ear headphones rate higher than any other high-end brand, and for a good reason. They are noise-canceling, have amazing sound quality, and are durable. They come with a higher price tag, but if you are going for premium headphones, this is my choice.
2. Desk Exercise Equipment
Being stationary too long can increase stress and fatigue and hurt your physical and overall wellness. Even small amounts of movement throughout the day can make a huge difference.

This walking pad is great for underneath your standing desk or in front of your TV. It is currently top-rated on Amazon for treadmills as it is quieter, has a remote control, and has a 320lb capacity.

This holds up to 550 lbs, comes with physical and digital workout resources, has resistance bands for additional workouts, and doubles as a balance chair that can be used in place of your desk chair. It helps you build core strength and improve your posture.

This anti-fatigue mat helps to make standing much more comfortable. The design makes for easy light stretching of the legs and encourages you to regularly switch standing positions to take a lot of pressure off your knees.
3. Smartwatch
A smartwatch can be used in so many ways. Sync it to your phone to get important notifications. This allows you to put your phone away, reducing distractions. Sync your calendar and timers to track tasks and to block time for focus, relaxation, and enjoyment. A smartwatch can also prompt you to get more movement in. Many watches even track sleep, heart rate variability, and other metrics that can help you identify when you need more rest or are under too much stress.

If you are an iPhone user, this is the highest-rated Apple Watch for the price. You can track your activity and sleep, among others. It has great phone integration and a wide array of apps.

Google integrated Fitbit into its watch. It is my top choice for an Android smartwatch for that reason. The Fitbit app gives you insights on how to improve aspects of your health. It integrates with your phone and also has a huge selection of apps for any need.

This watch is not only cost-effective but has nearly all the same features as many of the top brands (including a period tracker). It even has up to a 15-day battery life. If you are looking for something budget-friendly, this is a great choice!
4. Blue Light Blocking Glasses

These glasses help limit exposure to blue light, which can cause eye fatigue and disrupt sleeping patterns. This brand comes in a variety of styles, is affordable, and is one of the top-rated choices on Amazon.
5. Self-Care Toolbox
Sometimes we get busy and don’t feel we have the time to take care of ourselves. Having easy-to-grab tools helps to make that easier. Try putting together a basket with some tea, high-protein snacks, essential oils, or other tools that you can use when you need a moment to pause. Customize it with what brings you the most joy and keep it somewhere at or close to your workspace. For additional ideas on what to add, check out my article on building a self-care toolbox.
Conclusion
If you have read any of my previous articles, you may see some repeat suggestions. Why is that? Working on one aspect of wellness feeds into other aspects. Think about things that benefit you throughout all aspects of your life when you are setting goals.
There is no one answer for achieving occupational wellness. It is a personal journey, and what works for one person may not work for another. The above resources and products can help you discover what works best for you. Use them to create a work-life balance that not only sustains you but also brings you joy and satisfaction.
